I just moved from Arizona to Washington State. Do I have to File 2 separate returns for each state?

April 122010

My family and i moved from Arizona to Washington State. I have received all my W2 forms from both states. Arizona has a state tax, so i know i must file that. I need to know if i file 2 separate returns. Additionally, is there a good FREE place to get these filed?

Wash has no income tax
there are no free sites for filing state returns
you probably will file Az non resident since it appears your move to Wash in not temporary

You file ONE federal tax return using ALL w-2s received.
You file partial year resident returns for each state, but I don’t believe WA has state income tax, and that income will not be taxed by state.
After filing federal return, print it out, and go to the state’s department of revenue site. Most have free e-filing there. You use info from the federal return to complete state return.

You DO NOT file AZ nonresident. You were a resident at the time you received income, so file partial year resident since you moved out during the year.

No, just AZ – WA doesn’t have a state income tax.
