Grand Canyon, Taos, Oklahoma Panhandle in late December?

April 42010

Thinking about a 7-to-10 day winter camping vacation across northern Arizona & New Mexico, reaching as far as where Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico all come together, sort of.

We have winter gear for a car camping trip (Dodge van). No 4WD, no snow tires. Will that be okay? What kind of altitudes, temperatures, and snow conditions are we likely to encounter?

Also, many campgrounds are seasonal. Will we have difficulty finding places to pitch a tent?

All I know is about the panhandle. I’m not sure about campgrounds, but I can tell you it gets really cold in the panhandle during the winter…probably won’t get a lot of snow…but the wind is fierce…blows about 20-30 normally…gusts up to 60 or 70 and it is cold.

camping in arizona? please help!?

April 22010

Does anyone know of campgrounds that are open this time of the year, my brothers are going camping this weekend and they found out the one they wanted to go to was closed. they want to go somewhere with high elevation, idk why. they also mentioned wanting to camp near the grandcanyon. So can anyone please help me find a camp ground they can go to? also they dont want to camp in or around sedona.

Mather Campground at the south rim of the Grand Canyon is open year round.

Campgrounds at high elevation may be closed due to winter conditions and snow. The north rim of the Grand Canyon is already closed.

Where is the safest place to cross into Mexico?

March 312010

It can be from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona or California. Just for a day trip for lunch, haircut, dancing, margaritas and liquor. Maybe some dental work. How far is it from the nearest RV park or campground?
I’m handicap and need to be able to drive in without worrying about vandalism.

Upon the recommendation from an elderly neighbor, my family has been crossing over to Progresso for about 8 years now. When you walk over the bridge the town is right there – about five blocks of businesses on either side of the road, with many of them being pharmacies and dentists and the rest being shops and restaurants. The people are happy and courteous and mexican currency is not needed – all business is done in dollars. Most of the people walking across with you will be senior citizens from the U.S. going over to get their meds and dental work done. The parking in front of the businesses is mostly U.S. cars with handicap stickers on them so i don’t think that is a problem, just make sure you are insured. We have never had any problems of any kind. We’ve never gotten sick from eating there and I have a very sensitive stomach. My wife and 20 year old daughter have made this trip alone without me for the last three years. I’m searching the internet now to make sure it is still safe but I believe it to be. It is a very small town with not much there for drug lords.

Has anyone ever been to Laughlin, Nevada or Bullhead City, Arizona?

March 292010

What did you think of the area? The river, campgrounds and such?

Yes, in my last marrage we used to go to Laughlin, all the timel. Used to stay at the Ramada. It is a lot more layed back, quieter, than LV. Lot more people our age. Rooms where cheaper, I think we paid $23 a night. I loved the Colorado river, and the little boat that cruises back and forth on the river, between the casino’s. I heard that they were having trouble with the river flow, which is regulated more by what is going on upstream and Lake Mead, and it coming out of Hoover Dam area. One day it would be running real fast, next day not. I did hear fishing could be good. Very layed back area. Lots of the area is Indian owned or BLM.
In fact we were married in Bullhead city, across the river, as Laughlin is not corporated. I also fell in love with a new house in Bullhead City, that I would have loved buying. My drean home, overlooking the city. Great floorplan. Almost did it, but came to my senses. I still think about that house tho. I just love it down there. If you are anywhere around there, you also have to make the trip south to Lake Havasu, and see the ORIGINAL LONDON BRIDGE. England gave it to us, they took it apart piece by piece and got it over here, and then put it back together. It sits on the lake down there. Its kind of a touritst area down there. They have a lot of people that take their boats down there or just for picnic and swimming. There is a little village, English style. Never been to any of the Campground down there in Laughlin, as you could stay at the hotel for about the same as you could the campground. I just loved the desert area around there. I used to love walking the promenaud area by the Casino’s by the rivers edge. Reminded me of the New Orleans area. One of the Casino’s, can’t think of it’s name right this sec. but it’s the riverboat one, has the best BBQ restaurant for dinner or lunch. You need to check it out. They give you a lot to eat, for casino (low) price.
Real good meal, trust me. It’s upstairs just take the escalator.
Have fun, enjoy yourself, now I wish I was there also. Oh did I mention it can get real hot there, as I guess you know, afterall it is the desert.

What are the laws/restrictions regarding camping in Texas on state or public land?

March 252010

I am setting up a camping trip, but I’m not a fan of campgrounds, RV parks, etc. I recently moved to the Houston area from Arizona, where you could camp anywhere on the state lands unless specifically stated otherwise (Such as private property, military property, etc). I’m hoping to get some information about similiar stuff here, campfire restrictions, location restrictions, etc. Any help would be appreciated!

there are some forest lands near houston, but for the most part 95% of the land in Texas is privatly owned
