SEARCHING FOR ALIEN LIFE: Dr. Seth Shostak of SETI

April 172010

Is there alien life in the universe – or does it only exist in science fiction?

Dr. Seth Shostak, the Chief Astronomer for SETI (the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) gives a funny and candid look on our fascination with aliens, and the real world efforts by SETI to find extra terrestrial life. Dr. Shostak looks both at our history of “looking for ET” as well as the current and future potential for first contact.

Dr. Shostak’s speech was sponsored by the Beyond Center, an institute with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University.

How do you verify someone actually graduated from a University? (Arizona State Univ.) Are there lists?

April 172010

I am suspicious that this person is lying to me about graduating from Arizona State University. Does anyone know if alumni lists are available online or how I could know for sure?

When I worked in credentialing, we had to have the permission of someone (the person we are requesting the information on) before requesting verification of their degree. Most schools now use studentclearinghouse.com or something along those lines (and for a fee). There are some, however, where you can verify the information right over the phone by contacting the school’s registrar’s office.

how do i deny admission to the university of arizona?

April 122010

recently i was accepted into the university of arizona. now after already being accepted into my first choice how do i tell arizona that im not interested. other colleges that ive been accepted to have given me the choice to accept or deny admission but arizona doesnt.

Send a postal letter thanking them for admission and telling them that you have decided to attend another university. Do not name the other university. Be sure your name, address, U of A ID number, if any, and the date of the letter are on the letter. Sign the letter. Keep a photocopy of it. Mail the original to U of A.

Congratulations on the admission which you accepted.

Students and Teachers should be allowed to carry concealed firearms on Arizona university campuses?

April 102010

There is a bill in the Arizona State Legislature to allow anyone who can legally obtain their CCW permit to carry on campus.

For the record, I’m all for it.

If you were a lunatic hell bent on shooting as many people as possible, where would you go?

A. Somewhere you’re confident that noone else is armed

B. Somewhere where there’s a really good chance that at least one other person not hell bent on killing people is armed.

Kind of a no brainer.

Allowing law abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns would eliminate most of these mass murders.

Whats the lowest gpa Northern Arizona University will let in?

April 62010

My friend is looking into applying there with me and she wants to know if she could get in. I hear they have a good teaching program there and that’s what she wants to do. She has a 2.7 gpa, so what are the chances of her getting in?

I found the admissions requirements on Northern Arizona University’s website. She still has a chance of getting in. From the web page:

"Arizona residents may be conditionally offered admission if they meet the following:

* 2.5-2.99 GPA* (on a 4.0 scale), or
* top 50 percent class rank
* and have no more than one deficiency in any two subjects in the course requirements. Students with a combination math/science deficiency are not admissible. Conditionally admitted students may be required to participate in academic assistance programs."

"Nonresident students may be conditionally offered admission based on individual circumstances and/or space availability if they meet the following:

* 2.50-2.99 GPA* (on a 4.0 scale), or
* top 50 percent class rank
* and have no more than one deficiency in any two subjects in course requirements. Students with a combination math/science deficiency are not admissible. Conditionally admitted students may be required to participate in academic assistance programs."
